Can You Really Unclog a Drain with Cola?

Tired of that slow drain? Before you go out and buy drain cleaner, check your refrigerator for soda. Use the power of phosphoric acid to clear those clogged pipes. Today we’re sharing everything you need to know to unclog a drain with a cola soft drink – and how to get help from Mr. Rooter if that doesn’t solve the problem.

Why is Cola a Good Drain Cleaner?

Cola-style soft drinks contain phosphoric acid, which gives the beverages that distinct tang people love. It also helps prevent the growth of mold and bacteria in the sugary liquid. Phosphoric acid is definitely an effective drain cleaner, and don’t worry – it isn’t as toxic as it sounds. Phosphoric acid is made from phosphorous, which is found naturally in many foods. Just like anything with sugar, it should be consumed in moderation, but your toilet won’t suffer any damages!

To make sure you have the right kind of dark-colored soda, look to see if phosphoric acid is listed in the first four ingredients. Don’t use root beer.

Cola Drain Cleaner Trick

  1. Allow a two-liter bottle of soda to come to room temperature.
  2. Pour the entire bottle down the clogged drain.
  3. Allow it to sit in the drain for at least an hour or two (or even up to 24 hours for stubborn clogs).
  4. Flush drain with boiling water.
  5. Repeat as necessary.

If the drain refuses to unclog, it may have an obstruction the phosphoric acid can’t dissolve. Use a long piece of wire (e.g., a coat hanger) with a hooked end to probe the drain for any mysterious blockages. (Caution: This can get gross.)
